new delhi: the police believe the pre-planned manner in which the suspected assassins of phoolan have surfaced has raised the possibility of more surrenders in coming days. the delhi police seems to be pitched against a shrewd conspirator who has been creating alibis and making the "wanted" persons surrender. the conspirator, it seems, by engineering the surrender bids is trying to mislead the police.
by facilitating the arrests, the conspirator is ensuring that no immediate recoveries are made from the "wanted persons," the police said. the timing of the surrender bid by the prime suspect sher singh rana two days after his name was publicised by the police, also appeared to be a part of the same game plan. rana surrendered, apparently, after ensuring there was evidence to prove that he was in jail on the day of the assassination. if the developments in the case so far are any indication, the other three suspects rajinder, shekhar and rajbir may also come up with alibis to prove their presence at a place other than the assassination spot. the family members of rana, too, are likely to surface. whether they will be armed with strong alibis remains to be seen. rana's father, surinder singh, and two younger brothers, raju and vikram, are missing since the assassination. their role came under a microscope after reports from hardwar alleging he was in jail on the day of the assassination. now, the delhi police want to verify if the person who withdrew rana's bail bond on july 18, after which he was sent to hardwar jail, was indeed his father, surinder. another crucial alibi in the case was the one reportedly forwarded by phoolan's husband, umed singh. he is reported to have produced a perfect alibi to support his claim about being in kashmere gate at the time of the assassination. the conspiracy behind phoolan's assassination seems to have been planned with the help of criminals. "only a criminal can recommend a locally-made weapon over a revolver as the main assault weapon. a locally-made weapon is known to be more lethal, as proved in phoolan's case," said an investigator. the assassins first fired a shot each from two locally-made weapons and opened fire from revolvers to keep the pso at bay. the police, on their part, claim they are unfazed by the visible preparedness of the conspirator to derail investigations. "the statements of witnesses, including phoolan's pso balinder singh, are our trump cards against fake alibis," said an investigator. the police claim the mobile phone records and other recoveries made so far from the four accused are also likely to bolster the investigation. the conspiracy behind phoolan's assassination seems to have been planned with the help of criminals.
